Hey all. It’s Manny. By the time you read this, I’ll be in the hospital. It’s not for a bad thing. But it is a major thing for me personally, and it made me stop and really think deeply about my work, and the work of The Center for Hip-Hop Advocacy – this newsletter, our podcast, our journalism, our research, our events – and what we need to do next.
WE know how much hip-hop music, culture, and spirit, is actively uplifting lives, livelihoods, and communities. WE know how hip-hop can be applied to help solve some of our greatest problems. But too many don’t. Too many think hip-hop is harmful. Too many treat hip-hop culture as pure entertainment, something to use to get rich. And that hurts those who doing that good work – and it hurts those who could be benefiting from it. It’s our mission to change that narrative. For years, I’ve worked to lay the foundation for what I believe an institutional approach to hip-hop advocacy looks like. You’ve all been a part of it, and I thank you. It’s time we level up. As always, I thank you for your support, for allowing me into your e-world, and for your love and respect for the culture we all love and cherish. #RIPNipsey #TheMarathonContinues #HipHopAdvocacy #HipHopInnovates As always, on to the stories.
